Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Origem Psychotherapy offers Ketamine-Assisted Therapy: a life-changing method to enhance treatment, dissolve rigid patterns, and reframe trauma narratives.

It serves to help people embrace a deeper connection to others and themselves and feel greater self-fulfillment and empowerment in their life. Instead of treating symptoms, this model, a bio-medical-psycho-social-spiritual approach, recognizes the best source of healing comes from your inner self.

FAQs

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a safe, effective, legal, quick and flexible anti-depressant and mood enhancer. Ketamine has been FDA approved as a mental health treatment since 2019. Research supports effectiveness in treating anxiety, treatment-resistant depression and trauma.

How Does Ketamine Change the Brain?

Ketamine triggers neuroplasticity (a state when your brain can more easily learn, change and adapt), allowing the brain to make new connections and disconnect from old patterns of thinking, which contribute to mental health symptoms. This creates a temporary window for establishing new habits, thought patterns, and perceptions. Anti-depressant and mood-enhancing effects can begin within one to two hours after dosing sessions and have long-lasting effects.

How Does Ketamine Feel?

Ketamine’s effect is highly personal and depends on a person’s mindset and the setting of their experience. Generally, clients report feeling a sense of calm, awe or joy, tingling sensations, slightly elevated heart rate and an altered sense of time and space. In higher doses, client may have reduced awareness of their physical body or have an “out of body” experience. During dosing sessions, motor and verbal abilities are typically reduced. The altered state of consciousness during dosing sessions lasts about 45 minutes.

What is Journey Clinical?

Origem Psychology partners with Journey Clinical to provide safe, legal Ketamine prescriptions for eligible clients. Journey Clinical’s in-house medical team takes on patient eligibility, prescriptions and outcome monitoring, while Camila De Azevedo, licensed KAP provider, takes on preparation, dosing and integration psychotherapy sessions. Journey Clinical works with partnered compounding pharmacies to dispense and ship medications so that the client may be prescribed sublingual tablets, which will be brought to Origem Psychotherapy for dosing sessions. Origem Psychotherapy provides a safe, tranquil space for preparation, dosing and integration sessions with a trained psychotherapist.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

KAP is a form of therapy and treatment that combines the research-led science of psychedelic medicine with personalized psychotherapy.

The Ketamine-assisted sessions allow you to enter an altered state of consciousness – under the supervision of a trained psychotherapist – to access internal feelings and thoughts in a meaningful way. These learnings are applied to your day-to-day life as part of a personalized plan developed with your therapist to ensure better wellbeing, a deeper connection to yourself, and longevity in positive mental health outcomes; as well as maintaining enough lucidity to engage with the supervising therapist.

What Can I Expect During Preparation, Dosing and Integration Sessions?

Preparation sessions take place at Origem Psychotherapy one to two weeks before the first Ketamine dosing session. These sessions build the foundation for a collaborative relationship between the client and the psychotherapist. This is a time to build rapport, discuss expectations and set intentions. The client and psychotherapist will review ways to personalize the setting such as lighting, scent and sound to enhance the experience. The psychotherapist will review the treatment plan and safety protocols and answer any questions.

Dosing sessions last between one and three hours and take place in-person at Origem Psychotherapy. Before self-administering their Ketamine anti-nausea and Ketamine medications, clients make themselves comfortable by reclining on a zero-gravity chair, wearing an eye-mask, and listening to calming music or meditation. Some clients may find it helpful to bring a small, meaningful item to use for grounding during the dosing session. The psychotherapist is present the entire time to hold space and provide support as needed. The client will need to arrange transportation at the conclusion of the dosing session.

After every dosing session, the client and psychotherapist meet for integration sessions at Origem Psychotherapy to review memories, thoughts and insights that arose during the dosing session.
